Openserve taps AI to predict undersea cable and network faults
South African operator Openserve is adding AI and machine learning to its Network Operations Centre, using fibre sensing to detect vibrations from digging and flag potential cable damage before outages. The system covers terrestrial fibre, submarine cables Equiano, WACS, SAT-3/WASC and EASSy, and satellite services.
- Fibre sensing distinguishes normal traffic from digging vibrations and raises alerts
- Monitored submarine systems include Equiano, WACS, SAT-3/WASC and EASSy
- The centre tracks millions of network elements and exchange conditions
- Over 3,000 field technicians support a self-healing network that reroutes traffic
