Researchers say array of 60 house-sized buoys captures 90% of wave energy
Researchers from Germany and Australia simulated a fixed array of 60 connected buoys, some as large as small houses, each tuned to its own resonance frequency. The model converted up to 90% of potential wave energy even with varying wave directions. The concept remains theoretical, with no field tests yet and high expected installation and maintenance costs.
- A 60-buoy connected array converts up to 90% of wave energy in simulations
- Each buoy is individually tuned to a specific resonance frequency
- A single buoy could power several hundred households
- No field tests yet; installation and maintenance are expected to be costly
