Chandra and JWST spot a ghostly stellar nursery in the Carina Nebula
Astronomers using Chandra and JWST studied an isolated, ghost-like cloud in the Carina Nebula that is actively forming hot young stars. X-ray and infrared observations revealed the cloud's structure and comet-like knots shaped by radiation from Eta Carinae.
- The Carina Nebula lies more than 7,500 light-years from Earth
- Eta Carinae is a binary with combined brightness of about 5 million Suns
- The cloud hosts stars roughly 300,000–500,000 years old
- Ultraviolet radiation carves comet-like knots in the cloud
