Two devs built a Linux GPU driver for the M4 Mac mini in a month, mostly with coding agents
Cody Ho and Niklas Sheth published a working, OpenGL ES 3.0-conformant Linux GPU driver for the M4 Mac mini and MacBook Neo, built in about a month. Most of the code was written by LLM coding agents Codex and Claude, and it ships in Gravity Linux, a Fedora remix forked from Asahi Linux that permits generative AI.
- The driver passes the Khronos conformance suite for OpenGL ES 3.0
- Codex and Claude wrote most of the code; authors call it likely the first fully LLM-written GPU driver
- AGX firmware and M4 user space were reverse-engineered clean-room from live hardware traces
- The A18 Pro ABI has ~1.5x more structs and twice the pointers of M1/M2
