Astrolab's FLIP rover will run the first LLMs on the moon
Astrolab's FLIP rover, launching as early as November 2026, will carry HPE's Spaceborne-4 computer, the first to run large language models on the lunar surface. The models will analyze camera and lidar data for safe navigation and cut the amount of data sent back to Earth.
- FLIP weighs 480 kg and carries 20 scientific payloads
- The rover is designed to survive at least 150 hours of lunar night
- Spaceborne-4 pairs a 64-bit CPU with a GPU for parallel tasks
- Spaceborne-2 and 3 previously ran on the ISS for over two years
