BeamFS error-correcting filesystem proposed for Linux kernel
Developer Aurelien Desbrieres has proposed BeamFS, an experimental Linux filesystem that repairs data corruption from radiation and electromagnetic interference using Reed–Solomon forward error correction. Each 4 KB block is split into 16 RS(255,239) codewords, adding about 7% storage overhead and correcting up to eight corrupted bytes per codeword.
- BeamFS corrects up to 8 bytes per RS(255,239) codeword
- Error-correction overhead is about 7% of storage
- Tested on x86-64 and ARM64 with Linux 7.3-rc5
- No journaling or CoW; known bugs can cause data loss
