NVIDIA moves optics onto silicon interposer with OOI prototypes
At SEMICON West 2026 NVIDIA showed prototypes of Optics-on-Interposer (OOI), moving optical engines from the organic substrate to the silicon interposer for higher bandwidth density and lower power. It also demonstrated DWDM with eight wavelengths at 32 Gb/s each, reaching 256 Gb/s per fiber.
- OOI drops the organic substrate for higher bandwidth density and lower power
- DWDM demo: 8 wavelengths at 32 Gb/s, 256 Gb/s per fiber
- Both technologies are in research, commercialization expected around 2028
- NVIDIA CPO already ships in BlueField-5, NVLink 8 and Spectrum 7
