Ubuntu 26.10 Will Offer Rust-based Sequoia PGP as GnuPG Replacement
Ubuntu 26.10 will ship with Sequoia PGP preinstalled, a Rust-based OpenPGP implementation started in 2017 by three former GnuPG developers. Canonical aims to eventually make it the default toolchain, though that switch is still a future goal.
- Sequoia PGP will be available in Ubuntu 26.10 as an alternative to GnuPG
- The project was founded in 2017 by three ex-GnuPG developers
- Sequoia implements RFC 9580, while GnuPG follows RFC 4880 and LibrePGP
- The sq and sqv tools replace gpg and gpgv for encryption and signature verification
