Activating P2Y2 Receptor Reverses Autism-Linked Behaviors in Mice
Researchers reversed autism-related behavioral symptoms in adult mice by targeting endothelial cells lining brain blood vessels. Activating the P2Y2 receptor restored blood flow and eliminated hyperactivity, repetitive movements and impaired motor learning in mice with a 16p11.2 deletion. The drug used is already approved in Japan and South Korea for dry eye syndrome.
- Target is brain blood vessel endothelial cells, not neurons
- Mice with 16p11.2 deletion had about half normal ATP levels
- P2Y2 activation restored blood flow and behavior in adult mice
- The P2Y2-activating drug is approved in Japan and South Korea
