New York to study geothermal cooling for subways via thermal energy network
New York City and State will study a Thermal Energy Network (TEN) to cool the subway as part of upgrades to the Brooklyn Bridge 4/5/6 and Chambers Street J/Z stations. Brooklyn Bridge 4/5/6 reaches 96 °F (35 °C) in summer. Boreholes hundreds of feet deep at about 55 °F (12 °C) would absorb station heat and later supply it to municipal buildings in winter.
- Brooklyn Bridge 4/5/6 hits 96 °F (35 °C) in summer, among the hottest stations
- Boreholes hundreds of feet deep stay at about 55 °F (12 °C)
- Heat is stored in bedrock in summer and reused for heating in winter
- The project is currently a study tied to two station upgrades
