Netherlands moves government off Microsoft Office to NixOS

The Dutch government has launched pilot projects under its DAWO programme to replace Microsoft services with open source software built on the NixOS Linux distribution. The move began after US sanctions against the International Criminal Court in The Hague blocked access to Microsoft Office.

• The DAWO programme is run by the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and has live pilots
• NixOS was chosen over openSUSE and Fedora, tied to SUSE and Red Hat
• The German-backed openDesk suite was also adopted
• NOS research: 67% of Dutch government domains use a US cloud, nearly 50% Microsoft
