Quantum computing's "dark horse" non-Abelian anyons reach universal gate set
Researchers from UChicago PME, Harvard, Stony Brook and Quantinuum created non-Abelian anyons with S3 symmetry on 54 entangled qubits of the H2 trapped-ion processor, demonstrating a full universal gate set via braiding and fusion. It is the first experimental proof that universal quantum computation can work without costly magic state distillation.
- 54 entangled qubits on Quantinuum's H2 trapped-ion processor
- S3 symmetry replaces D4 used in the 2024 experiment
- Universal gate set built from braiding plus fusion
- Approach may bypass magic state distillation
