Backstage 2026: from service catalog to AI hub with MCP and AiResource

At BackstageCon 2026 in Amsterdam, Spotify and CNCF outlined Backstage's shift from a service catalog to a control plane for AI agents. Since late 2025 the portal supports the Model Context Protocol, and v1.54 added the AiResource entity type. Backstage is used by over 3,400 organizations and more than 2 million developers, with an estimated 89% market share.
