Topcoat lets Rust render server-side web apps
Carl Lerche, creator of the Tokio async runtime, unveiled Topcoat, a framework for building web apps in Rust, at ScyllaDB's P99 conference. Most logic runs on the server with only rendered HTML sent to the browser, while client-side code in a Rust subset compiles to JavaScript.
- Topcoat renders components on the server and sends only HTML fragments to the browser
- Client-side logic in a Rust subset is automatically compiled to JavaScript
- The Toasty ORM lets components query the database directly during rendering
- The framework targets typical database-driven apps, not complex projects like Figma
