GitHub rebuilds Git storage for the age of AI agents
GitHub is rebuilding Spokes, the system that stores its Git repositories: in September developers and AI agents made 7.38 billion commits and 3.35 billion pushes, more than five times last year's volume. The new design separates storage from compute and coordinates only the ref update, delivering up to 35 times more write throughput in internal benchmarks.
- 7.38 billion commits and 3.35 billion pushes in September, over 5x year-over-year
- Only the ref update needs coordination; other push steps now run in parallel
- Repository data moves to Azure Blob Storage, with cache workers serving reads
- Internal benchmarks show up to 35x higher write throughput
