Medieval tsunamis on Italy's Lake Iseo reached 160 feet
A Nature Communications study reconstructed two medieval tsunamis on Lake Iseo in northern Italy, triggered by underwater landslides after earthquakes in 1117 and 1222 AD. The 1117 wave may have climbed 164 feet and flooded 1.7 miles inland, with centuries of farming and deforestation steepening the delta that fed the collapses.
- The 1117 wave reached 164 feet and flooded 1.7 miles inland
- The 1222 tsunami peaked near 43 feet
- Farming and forest clearing tripled sediment flowing into the Oglio delta
- Similar landslide layers were found in Lakes Como and Garda
