Study finds a few fast-aging cells can shorten EV battery pack life
Research in Nature Energy analyzing over three years of real-world EV data found that a small number of rapidly aging cells can cut a pack's lifespan. Uneven cell aging shortened pack life by 17.7% in passenger cars and 22.8% in buses, while available power fell 12.9% and 15.1%.
- Cell inconsistency cut pack lifespan by 17.7% in cars and 22.8% in buses
- Available power dropped 12.9% and 15.1% respectively
- After ~170,000 km some cells in many car packs age faster
- Packs used only 80.7% and 72.9% of their potential energy
