Youth protein TIMP2 restores young functions in aging brain cells
Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai found that the protein TIMP2 keeps microglia, the brain's immune cells, healthy. Injecting TIMP2 into older mice improved debris clearance and reduced inflammation markers. The study was published in Nature Communications.
- Removing TIMP2 gave microglia aging and neurodegeneration-linked features
- TIMP2 injections in older mice improved debris clearance and cut inflammation
- The study appeared in Nature Communications
- TIMP2 was previously known as a regulator of synaptic plasticity
