New EU data rules bring access by design for consumers in Ireland

From September 12, 2026, EU rules require makers of connected devices (smartwatches, medical devices, smart home, cars) to give users direct access to their data and the ability to share it with third parties by default. In Ireland, the CCPC oversees enforcement.

• Rule applies to devices placed on the EU market from September 12, 2026
• Data can be exported via built-in interface or app without asking the data holder
• Users can transfer data to repair and maintenance services
• In Ireland, oversight is assigned to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC)
