Torvalds' AI-written page-cache patches reach RFC: up to 4.5x faster ext4 reads
Meta kernel developer Kiryl Shutsemau reworked Linus Torvalds' 10 LLM-generated page-cache patches into an 18-patch RFC series posted to LKML. Deferring the freeing of hot folios until after an RCU grace period removes reference-count operations, speeding ext4 reads about 4.5x, tmpfs about 43x, and ext4 up to 13x with mitigations disabled.
- ext4: ~15M to 68.9–70.1M reads/s with 64 threads
- tmpfs improves roughly 43x, to 71–72M reads/s
- With mitigations off, ext4 reaches 217–220M reads/s
- Still RFC: seven open issues, including a 64-bit restriction
