Linux 7.4 adds TAINT_FORCED_BIND flag for manual driver binds
Linux 7.4 will set a new TAINT_FORCED_BIND flag, shown as Y, whenever a driver is bound or unbound by hand via sysfs. Greg Kroah-Hartman added it after syzbot fuzzing forced drivers onto unsuitable hardware and flooded maintainers with useless reports. The patch is in the 7.4 driver core pull request.
- Flag Y is set before the bind/unbind callback and appears in taint output and crash reports
- Trigger was syzbot fuzzing that attached drivers to unsuitable hardware
- Manual binds still work but mark the kernel as tainted
- Kroah-Hartman asks fuzzer operators to enable panic_on_taint
