Webb captures the golden galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-030
The James Webb Space Telescope has imaged the MACS J0454.1-030 galaxy cluster, whose light traveled about 6 billion light-years to reach us. Gravitational lensing by the cluster magnifies distant objects by more than 300 times, including a galaxy that existed just 800 million years after the Big Bang.
- Light from the cluster's galaxies traveled about 6 billion light-years
- Lensing magnifies some objects by a factor of more than 300
- One galaxy in the image existed 800 million years after the Big Bang
- Red lensed galaxies date to when the Universe was 2 billion years old
