Verdox tests electrochemical CO₂ capture at Hydro aluminum smelter
Verdox completed a two-month test capturing CO₂ from Hydro's Sunndal aluminum smelter in Norway, where exhaust contains only about 1% CO₂. The process is quoted at roughly 1.5 GJ (417 kWh) per tonne of CO₂, but full plant cost, module lifetime and total power demand remain undisclosed.
- Two-month trial ran on real smelter exhaust with about 1% CO₂
- Process energy quoted at roughly 1.5 GJ (417 kWh) per tonne of CO₂
- Full plant cost, module lifetime and total power demand not disclosed
- Anode consumption accounts for about three quarters of a smelter's direct emissions
