Microsoft Edge Tests Seamless Updates Without Browser Restart
Microsoft is prototyping seamless Edge updates that move the browser to a new version in the background while users keep working, preserving open tabs and form data. The feature is not in production code, but two update options are available now: restart-on-idle and security update alerts for administrators.
- Prototype downloads updates in the background and switches tabs without a restart
- Existing tabs persist only when old and new versions are compatible
- Restart to update on idle applies patches in hours instead of days
- Security Update Alerts are free for admins of managed Windows devices
