Intel calls silicon photonics the "golden hammer" of next-gen systems
At OCP 2026 Intel said it is the only high-volume fab delivering 300mm indium phosphide photonics at scale for the industry. The company targets below 5 picojoules per bit and plans integrated lasers for NPO and CPO in HPC and AI systems.
- Intel claims to be the only volume fab with 300mm InP silicon photonics
- Target is under 5 pJ per bit versus copper link limits
- Integrated lasers need no servicing; external light sources also planned
- Aimed at HPC and AI systems spanning CPUs, GPUs and memory pools
