Honda completes development of in-road wireless EV charging system
Honda, with partners Taisei and Taisei Rotec, has finished developing a magnetic coupling dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) road system that charges EVs while they drive. Testing on a purpose-built lane starts later this year, targeting up to 150 kW for vehicles including heavy commercial trucks.
- DWPT combines a ground DC supply, in-road distribution units and a receiver on the vehicle's undercarriage
- Testing later this year includes 49 kN per-wheel loads and a simulated 1 million wheel passes
- Target power transfer is up to 150 kW, including for heavy commercial vehicles
- First use case is logistics and freight; no timeline for widespread deployment
