Honda wants to turn highways into wireless chargers for electric trucks
Honda is developing a wireless charging system that embeds transmitters in road surfaces to power electric trucks while they drive, working with Taisei and Taisei Rotec. A pilot on Japan's Tateyama Expressway in Chiba starts in fiscal 2027, targeting up to 150 kW.
- Buried transmitters use a DC distribution system, each unit combining an inverter and coil
- Road structures are designed to withstand traffic from vehicles weighing around 20 tons
- Durability testing targets one million wheel loads at 49 kN per wheel
- Pilot on the Tateyama Expressway in Chiba begins April 1, 2027
