Furifont embeds furigana directly into the font via OpenType
Developer Anthony Fu released Furifont, an experimental OpenType font that embeds furigana into kanji glyphs using contextual substitutions (GSUB, calt) and stylistic variants. It needs no <ruby> markup or CSS, picking the reading from neighboring characters or manually.
- Furigana is drawn inside the kanji glyph without <ruby> or CSS
- The GSUB table picks the reading from neighboring kanji, no JavaScript
- Stylistic variants set the reading manually for ambiguous cases
- Without OpenType support, browsers show only the kanji
