NASA Finds Over 10,000 Young Faults on the Moon
Scientists identified more than 10,000 young faults on the lunar surface using images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. The Moon's radius has shrunk by roughly 45 meters over the past 400 million years, and moonquakes can occur anywhere on the body.
- Over 8,900 lobate scarps and 2,000 small mare ridges mapped
- Moon's radius shrank about 45 meters in 400 million years
- Contraction rate is 6–11 cm per million years
- Thicker lunar crust regions show fewer faults
