Sentinel-3C in Orbit: EUMETSAT Algorithm Fixes Coastal Ocean Color Errors
Europe's Copernicus Sentinel-3C launched on September 15, 2026, and is now in commissioning. EUMETSAT's Collection-4 upgrade, operational since February 26, 2026, adds a redesigned atmospheric correction module using SLSTR SWIR bands to fix long-standing coastal ocean color errors.
- Sentinel-3C launched September 15, 2026, with first Earth views in late September
- Over 90% of the sensor signal comes from the atmosphere, not the ocean
- Collection-4 has been operational since February 26, 2026
- SLSTR SWIR bands at 1.6 and 2.2 µm complement the 21-band OLCI at 300 m resolution
