World-first DNA computer runs without continuous power
Researchers at Maynooth University built a molecular computer from interacting DNA strands in water that added 10 and 3 in 30 seconds and can multiply and divide without a continuous power supply. The reusable system ran up to 25 calculations in a row, including 100-bit computations, and was published in Nature.
- Adding 10 and 3 took 30 seconds in a droplet of DNA solution
- The system is reusable for up to 25 calculations in a row
- 100-bit computations took up to 14 hours to finish
- The DISCO project is backed by a €4 million EIC grant
