Malaysia to test Cell Broadcast emergency alert system on 19 November
Malaysia's communications regulator MCMC will run a pilot test of its Cell Broadcast System on 19 November. Phones in flood-prone areas of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Pahang will receive a simulated emergency alert as part of the drill.
- Pilot covers flood-prone areas in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Pahang
- Cell Broadcast needs no phone number, data plan or third-party app
- It replaces batch SMS alerts from NADMA that often arrive late
- Alerts still depend on cell towers that can fail during floods
