Meta tests Gems badges on Threads for original posts

Meta is testing a feature called Gems on Threads that uses an automated algorithm to badge original public posts and direct replies that spark discussion. It is live in the US for users 18 and older, while reposts and cross-posted Instagram content are excluded.

• Gems are picked once a day in the US based on originality, fresh perspective and real conversation
• Only public posts and direct replies from users 18+ qualify; reposts and cross-posts are excluded
• The badge can be hidden via the three-dot menu; missing out does not affect reach
• App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted early designs for the feature in August
