Indonesia presses Meta to speed up deactivation of under-16 accounts
Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has called on Meta to accelerate deactivation of accounts belonging to users under 16 on Facebook, Instagram and Threads under the PP Tunas regulation. Since March 2026, access has been restricted for 28 million child accounts across eight platforms.
- Meta deactivated 184,000 accounts of users under 13 in Indonesia between March and May 2026
- Restrictions cover Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, X, Bigo Live and Roblox
- Indonesia is considering linking social media accounts to phone numbers or national ID cards
- Authorities threaten to terminate access for platforms that fail to comply with PP Tunas
