AWS adds instance-type contract to EC2 AMIs
Starting September 4, 2026, AMI owners can declare SupportedInstanceTypes and UnsupportedInstanceTypes, and EC2 blocks launches outside the list. The feature is free in all regions, the specification survives CopyImage, and it is unavailable for AWS Marketplace images.
- InstanceTypeSpecification defines allowed and denied instance types
- A launch outside the list returns InvalidParameterCombination from RunInstances
- replace-image-instance-type-specification swaps the whole specification
- The restriction is unavailable for AMIs listed in AWS Marketplace
