James Webb pinpoints most distant fast radio burst ever seen
Astronomers detected FRB 20240304B, the most distant fast radio burst yet, originating more than 10 billion light-years away from a time when the universe was about 3 billion years old. Using JWST, they identified the host galaxy, which is smaller than expected, metal-poor and forming many stars. The finding more than doubles the previous distance record for FRBs.
- FRB 20240304B traveled more than 10 billion light-years
- Host galaxy redshift measured at about 2.15
- Host galaxy is metal-poor and actively forming stars
- Previous FRB distance record more than doubled
