South Africa prioritises batteries and gas for reliable power
Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa presented the new Section 34 Determination for additional generation capacity over 2026–2037. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and gas-to-power are prioritised to address surplus electricity and curtailment risks. The first battery storage bid window attracted R15.4 billion in investment.
