South Africa to procure 9.6GW of new capacity: 4.6GW batteries, 5GW gas
Energy minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced a determination for 9.6GW of new capacity — 4.6GW of battery storage and 5GW of gas-to-power, with no new wind or solar. The move addresses a daytime surplus of over 4GW and rising curtailment payments; battery investment is estimated at upwards of R90-billion.
