Infineon and ZuriQ team up to scale trapped-ion qubits
Infineon and Swiss quantum startup ZuriQ, spun out of ETH Zurich, are expanding their collaboration to scale qubits. The partners have trapped a 3×3 array of nine individually controlled ions — the largest 2D array of its kind — and now aim to reach significantly higher qubit counts.
- Partners trapped a 3×3 array of nine individually controlled ions
- ZuriQ uses a 2D Penning micro-trap instead of 1D ion chains
- Design avoids complex junction structures for larger arrays
- Goal is scalable qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computing
