Tianjin University builds single-crystal COF membrane for faster carbon capture
A team at Tianjin University developed an all-organic mixed-matrix membrane with single-crystal covalent organic frameworks for carbon capture. It reached a CO2 permeability of 74,800 Barrer with a CO2/N2 selectivity of about 20, and a preliminary techno-economic analysis puts capture cost at roughly $38 per ton of CO2. The work was published in Nature Energy on October 7.
- COF single crystals were loaded into the polymer at up to 75.5% by volume
- CO2 permeability hit 74,800 Barrer with CO2/N2 selectivity of about 20
- Polyimide versions kept about 85% of initial permeability after six months
- Preliminary capture cost estimate is about $38 per ton of CO2
