Chrome 155 adds native JPEG XL support with a Rust decoder
Google announced on October 6, 2026 that Chrome 155 decodes JPEG XL (.jxl) natively, without plugins or flags. The jxl-rs decoder is written from scratch in Rust, replacing the C++ implementation to eliminate memory-safety bugs. JPEG XL compresses 30–50% better than JPEG and supports lossless transcoding.
- Chrome 155 decodes .jxl natively, with no extensions or experimental flags
- The jxl-rs decoder is written in Rust, avoiding out-of-bounds reads and use-after-free
- JPEG XL compresses 30–50% better than JPEG, with lossless mode and HDR
- Decoding only for now: Chrome still has no .jxl encoder
