California signs 3D printer gun law mandating firearm-blocking tech
Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation making California the second US state, after New York, to require firearm-blocking technology in 3D printers sold in the state. The mandate only takes effect once ASTM International publishes a relevant standard, with the DOJ checking quarterly until July 1, 2029.
- Law covers sale and transfer of printers, not ownership or use
- Existing 3D printers are exempt with no retrofit mandate
- DOJ must begin checking for an ASTM standard by July 1, 2027
- Colorado and Washington have similar bills in their legislatures
