Apple may soon track when Google promotes Chrome inside Safari
Since iOS 27.2 beta 2, Apple has been testing Safari code that detects when Google shows banners promoting Chrome or the Google app and whether users interact with them. The feature is undocumented and may not ship; it appears amid regulatory scrutiny of browser competition in the EU and UK.
- Safari injects a .js script into Google search pages to find promo banners
- The code looks for Chrome and Google app links via URL schemes and App Store IDs
- It logs banner display, Google account sign-in and user interaction
- Apple has not documented the feature in iOS 27.2 beta 3 release notes
