California's CARS Act takes effect for car buyers
California's CARS Act (SB 766) went into effect on October 1, 2026, adding new rules for how dealers sell cars. It requires full-price disclosure in ads and written communications, disclosure of total payment costs, and a three-day cancellation right for used vehicles priced at $50,000 or less.
- Dealers must advertise the full price including adjustments and installed items
- Monthly payment talks must disclose the total cost over the full schedule
- A three-day right to cancel applies to used vehicles at $50,000 or less
- Restocking fees and mileage charges over 250 miles are allowed
