China Huadian connects first 100-MW compressed CO2 energy storage project to grid
China Huadian has connected its compressed carbon dioxide energy storage project in Mulei, Xinjiang, to the grid — the first 100-MW-class facility of its kind in China. The 100 MW/1,000 MWh plant stores about 290 GWh of off-peak electricity and releases roughly 180 GWh at peak, generating continuously for over six hours.
- Rated at 100 MW and 1,000 MWh, grid connection took place on September 30
- Stores about 290 GWh and releases 180 GWh annually, over 6 hours of continuous output
- Five gas domes, 141 liquid units and 97 heat storage units on 56 hectares of gobi
- Saves about 50,000 tons of standard coal and 170,000 tons of CO2 per year
