ESA's Juice uses Earth gravity assist to slingshot toward Jupiter
On September 28, ESA's Juice spacecraft passed just 8,640 km above the Indian Ocean, changing its course by 20° and gaining 3.5 km/s while using minimal fuel. The flyby also let teams calibrate its 10 science instruments; the next Earth flyby is set for January 2029, with arrival at Jupiter in 2031.
- Closest approach was 8,640 km above the Indian Ocean on September 28
- Trajectory shifted 20° and speed rose 3.5 km/s with little fuel used
- Only one of six planned course corrections was needed
- Juice will make 35 flybys of Ganymede, Callisto and Europa
