Canada: up to 6 GW of gas projects for AI data centers, Meta builds 1 GW for $9B
Alberta holds nearly all near-term gas-fired projects for AI and HPC data centers under a bring-your-own-generation model: about 6 GW of fairly firm capacity, though most remain proposed or in permitting. The flagship is Meta's 1 GW campus in Sturgeon County, costing roughly $9 billion, under construction since July 2026 and targeting service by 2030.
- Meta's 33rd data center worldwide is a 1 GW, ~$9B campus in Alberta, built in 2–3 years
- Greenlight Electricity Centre, 932 MW for Meta, reached final investment decision in July 2026
- Realistic ceiling this decade is single-digit GW of new gas-fired AI load in Alberta
- 40 GW baseload needs 6–7 Bcf/d of gas versus Western Canada's record ~19.1 Bcf/d output
