OpenAI says AI agents proposed a Navier-Stokes solution in 88 hours
OpenAI reported that an internal system of roughly 10,000 concurrent AI agents constructed a finite-time singularity for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with a smooth external force, one route allowed by the Clay Institute formulation. The run took about 88 hours plus 17 hours of Lean formalization, using 2.7 million messages and some 130 billion output tokens. The unforced smoothness question remains open.
- About 10,000 concurrent agents, 2.7 million messages and 130 billion output tokens
- Proposed solution emerged in 88 hours; Lean verification took another 17 hours
- Result covers the forced case with smooth external force, not unforced smoothness
- Mathematicians Buckmaster and Alpöge had earlier advanced related Euler-equation work
