US clears environmental review for 835 MW Three Mile Island reactor restart

The Christopher Crane Clean Energy Center in Pennsylvania, formerly Three Mile Island unit 1, passed an environmental assessment by the NRC and DOE. Constellation Energy aims to return 835 MW to the grid in 2027 but still needs NRC approval to resume operations.

• Unit 1 shut down in 2019, but its operating license remains valid until 2034
• The DOE closed a $1 billion loan to Constellation to finance the restart
• Constellation filed an exemption request and three license amendments with the NRC
• The company targets 835 MW back on the grid in 2027 and operation until 2054
