California signs law to block 3D-printed firearms

Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2047, which could eventually require 3D printers sold in California to detect and block files for printing firearms. The requirement only takes effect if ASTM International publishes a qualifying industry standard by July 1, 2029.

• Newsom signed AB 2047 on September 26, 2026
• From July 1, 2027, California DOJ must check every three months for an ASTM standard
• If no standard appears by July 1, 2029, DOJ's obligation to keep checking ends
• Final version dropped up to $25,000 penalties and the industrial printer exemption
